Why 60 minutes of physical activity?
Because Active Kids Do Better. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services? Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, children and adolescents need 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day to help kids stay healthy and strong. It can also lead to: higher test scores; improved attendance; increased focus; better behavior in class; lower rates of childhood obesity; and a lifetime of healthy habits.

Active Schools streamlines the selection of programs, resources, professional development and funding opportunities, and delivers a customized Action Plan - making it simple for teachers and strategic for administrators. Ultimately, Let's Move! Active Schools, part of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative, helps schools develop a culture in which physical activity and physical education are foundational to academic success.
Let's Move! Active Schools helps schools increase physical activity opportunities for students by...
- Leveraging its powerful network of national health and education organizations.
- Matching schools with evidence-based programs, resources and initiatives.
- Elevating the role of physical educators.
- Equipping school and district leaders to enact system-change.
- Providing funding for physical activity and physical education programming and curriculum.
Our school does not offer physical education; can Let's Move! Active Schools help us?
Absolutely. Physical education is important because it helps kids develop physical literacy, but there are plenty of other ways to inject physical activity into the school day. Recess, in-class brain breaks, active lesson plans and before- and after-school programs all work together to create an Active School.
Are there professional development opportunities?
Yes! Discover how to harness the power of physical activity and physical education in your school or district with game-changing Let’s Move! Active Schools professional development. Our robust menu will propel you through different stages of the Let’s Move! Active Schools journey and is valuable for any school or district.
Three types of professional development are offered – all at no cost to you! The Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Learning System is an overarching, comprehensive program for champions during all points in the process, while Customized Professional Development and Online Trainings address identified areas in your Let’s Move! Active Schools Action Plan. You can engage in all the offerings or whichever fits your current needs best.

What does success look like? How will I know when we?re truly an Active School?
You've crossed the finish line when your school has built five core elements into every student's experience: 1) Physical Education, 2) Physical Activity During School, 3) Physical Activity Before- and After-School, 4) Staff Involvement and 5) Family & Community Engagement.
It may sound like a lot, but it is our job to make the process easier for you! Your Assessment is only 9-11 questions (depending on grade level), and your Action Plan will map out the exact changes you need to make on the way to becoming an Active School. Chances are, you won't be able to make all the changes at once, and that's okay. We recommend making a few changes each year and updating your plan annually.
What is the Let's Move! Active Schools National Award and how do I apply?
When you've completed the Assessment and fulfilled the award criteria, you'll be invited to apply for the Let's Move! Active Schools National Award.
The Let's Move! Active Schools National Award honors schools that have demonstrated outstanding leadership in creating an Active School environment. The award celebrates a school's exemplary efforts in and commitment to an effective physical education program and the integration of at least 60 minutes of physical activity before, during and after the school day.
Applications are available on your Let's Move! Active Schools Dashboard between December 2015 and April 2016.
