Stetson Elementary School Wins SPARK Specialty Workshop Contest

Colorado Springs, CO | News Story

Sportime® featuring SPARK teamed up with Let’s Move! Active Schools in fall 2016 to host the Specialty Workshop Contest, a chance for educators across the country to win a specialty workshop of their choice and bring a past SHAPE America Teacher of the Year or SPARK Presenter to their school district for a unique hands-on professional development experience.

To be eligible, schools had to be enrolled in Let’s Move! Active Schools with a completed online assessment, and complete an entry form to describe how the workshop would help their school increase physical education and physical activity opportunities for students. Over 400 schools entered the contest.

This year’s Specialty Workshop Contest winner is Stetson Elementary School in Colorado Springs, CO. Opened in 1987, Stetson is known as a high-achieving, traditional, neighborhood school with a warm, friendly and safe atmosphere.

“My students are cheerful, outgoing, competitive in a friendly way, have lots of energy, and have complete confidence in themselves,” says Matt Monfre, physical education teacher at Stetson Elementary School. “They are eager to learn new and creative ways to be active and stay healthy at school and for life-long living.“

The school selected the“Magical MVPA Maximized!” workshop, a full-day, fun and active program that provides physical educators with strategies for increasing moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during physical education classes and in other environments.  In addition to the workshop, Stetson Elementary School received an $800 voucher for physical education supplies from Sportime. The total value of the prize is $3,000. The school plans to host the workshop for their district in May.

“The SPARK ‘Magical MVPA Maximized!’ workshop will provide my district colleagues and I with the tools to teach new and creative activities to our students,” says Monfre. “The new strategies will enhance the physical education programs in our school district, and the new equipment will be well used by Stetson Elementary students. Let’s move and get active!”

This spring, Sportime featuring SPARK will host another workshop contest — the Inclusive PE Specialty Workshop Contest. Beginning March 14, 2017, schools will be invited to apply for an Inclusive PE workshop, guidebook, and equipment pack, valued at over $3,500.
